Russell Simmons: A Deep Dive
A look into the life of Russell Simmons.
I’ll keep adding as I go but the main reason Russell is on my list and getting a Deep Dive is because he met Kimora Lee when she was 16 and ended up being seen dating when she was just barely 18. Russell also spent time with Donald Trump and runs in similar circles that are raising red flags.

Russell Wendell Simmons
Born: Queens, New York - October 4, 1957
Russell is up here because he met Kimora Lee when she was 16 years old and was seen publicly holding hands with her around 18 years of age. Considering his influence over Kimora, and possibly other models in the ecosystem of the music and modeling industries, I’ve given him a red flag.
Russell has been accused of sexual misconduct, including rape and sexual assault, by more than 20 women. The allegations, which spanned from the 1980s to the 2010s, first surfaced publicly in November 2017, leading to his resignation from his business empire.
Rape Allegations:
Several women have publicly accused Simmons of rape, including:
Drew Dixon: Former Def Jam executive who alleged she was raped by Simmons in 1995.
Tina Baker: Singer-turned-lawyer who alleged she was raped by Simmons in the early 1990s.
Sil Lai Abrams: Writer and activist who accused Simmons of rape in 1994.
Jenny Lumet: Screenwriter who claimed she was sexually assaulted by Simmons in 1991.
Sherri Hines: Musician who accused Simmons of raping her in his office in 1983.
Jennifer Jarosik: Filmmaker who filed a $5 million lawsuit alleging rape in 2018, which she later dropped.
Jane Doe: A former Def Jam executive who sued in February 2024 for an alleged 1990s rape.
Sexual Misconduct/Harassment: Other women, including model Keri Claussen Khalighi, publicist Kelly Cutrone, and actress Natashia Williams-Blach, have accused him of assault, attempted rape, or sexual harassment.
Recent Legal Issues: In February 2024, a new lawsuit was filed by a former Def Jam executive (”Jane Doe”) alleging rape and harassment in the 1990s. In 2023, Simmons entered into a confidential settlement with three women, including Sil Lai Abrams, regarding their allegations.
Response and Defense
Vehement Denial: Simmons has “categorically” and “vehemently” denied all allegations of non-consensual sexual activity, stating that all his relationships were consensual.
Polygraph Tests: Simmons has claimed to have taken nine lie detector tests, which he says prove his innocence regarding the allegations of violence.
Relocation: Following the 2017 allegations, Simmons stepped down from his companies and moved to Bali, Indonesia, which has no extradition treaty with the U.S..
Legal Counter-attacks: Simmons has filed a defamation lawsuit against HBO and the producers of the 2020 documentary On the Record, which featured several of his accusers.
Impact
Resignation: Simmons severed ties with his companies, including Def Jam and All Def Digital, in 2017.
Documentary: The 2020 HBO Max documentary On the Record detailed the allegations made by his accusers.
Investigation: The New York Police Department (NYPD) investigated several of the claims in 2017, although some incidents were outside the statute of limitations at that time.
In 1992, Simmons launched the clothing line Phat Fashions LLC using the Phat Farm and Baby Phat labels. When Simmons first created Phat Fashions LLC, the clothing line was sold in a shop in the SoHo district of Manhattan. Simmons’s connections with well-known rap artists helped to promote the clothing line to a wide audience. The influence of designers such as Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger gave the clothing line a classic look and feel. Phat Fashions encompassed hip hop clothing for women and children, as well as men, and grew into a lifestyle brand with the addition of jewelry, perfume, and other merchandise. Phat Fashions LLC sold merchandise in two stores in New York and Montreal, as well as online at www.phatfarm.com. In addition, the clothing line was carried by some 3,000 retailers in the United States
2004
Simmons sold Phat Farm and Baby Phat to the Kellwood Company for $140 million.
In the same year, Simmons formed Russell Simmons Music Group, or RSMG, a record label founded as a joint venture with Universal Music’s Island Def Jam Music Group. Tony Austin was the label’s president.
The Island Def Jam Music Group (Island Def Jam/IDJMG) was an American record label group formed on December 31, 1998, by Universal Music Group. In 2024, Universal Music Group restructured its East Coast labels, including Def Jam Recordings, Island Records, Mercury Records, and Republic Records, under a central operational hub named Republic Corps.
On April 1, 2014, Universal Music Group publicly announced the dissolution of the Def Jam Group, leaving IDJMG and its affiliated subsidiaries as separate sister labels.
